Dr. Tarun Gupta (fondly known as TG)

We could remember, as if it were yesterday.  In 1970s when Mr.Tarun Gupta (fondly known as TG) became the Managing Director of Glaxo – elevated from Family Care Division of Glaxo, was a regular visitor to our Calcutta (Kolkata) residence.  He was an intimate friend of Mitra family.  The purpose of his visit was to influence, Professor Chitta Mitra, to float an organization to study the medical practitioners’ inclination in India.  However, Professor Mitra, then a Senior Professor of Marketing at IIM Calcutta and a Visiting Professor of Harvard Business School & MIT, USA, enjoying his profession, was reluctant to TG’s proposal. TG relentlessly persuaded and never gave up.  Finally, in 1976 TG convinced, Mrs. Annapurna Mitra (then a subject teacher in a leading girls’ collegiate school at Calcutta) and Mr Chinmay Mitra to float an organization to study the medical practitioners’ inclination in India.

Like those who create legacies, TG was a personality difficult to ignore. TG will always be remembered as a great mentor – was conferred with many awards for his invaluable contributions. TGs incredible positive influence mesmerized all his associates. His dedication and commitment to the profession was remarkable.

We consider ourselves lucky to have had a wonderful friend, philosopher and guide like TG. Our special memories with TG will remain as long as we are alive.
